Science

Intent
At Luton Primary school we recognise the importance of science in every aspect of daily life. We ensure consistency so that pupils can confidently explore, discover and question the world in which they live. From Early years through to Year 6 pupils will be encouraged to question the World around them and begin to recognise the way in which science impacts their future of a personal, national and global level.
Key aspects of the Science curriculum intent include:
1. Knowledge and Understanding: The curriculum aims to develop a deep understanding of the key scientific knowledge and ideas that impact pupils as individuals within a local and global context. This includes the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry, and physics
2. Practical Skills and Enquiry: We believe that all pupils should experience hands-on, practical lessons that bring science to life and enable them to develop their investigative skills. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of working scientifically and developing the skills of enquiry
3. Critical Thinking and Analysis: The curriculum encourages pupils to think critically and analyse scientific evidence. This includes understanding how scientists study the natural world and construct explanations based on evidence
4. Inclusivity and Accessibility: Recognizing that learning is a journey with different starting points and ways of learning, the curriculum is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all pupils. It aims to provide additional or different opportunities to ensure all students can succeed
5. Engagement and Enjoyment: The curriculum seeks to foster a passion for science by creating engaging and enriching learning experiences. This includes the use of enquiry-based learning, where students are encouraged to ask questions and explore scientific topics in depth
6. Personal Development: The curriculum supports pupils' personal development by helping them to build self-confidence, resilience, and independence. It encourages pupils to set personal goals, reflect on their achievements, and develop a growth mindset
