Modern Foreign Languages- Spanish

Intent
The intent of the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum at Luton Primary is to provide pupils with the linguistic skills and cultural understanding necessary to thrive in a globalized world. The curriculum is designed in a sequential way to provide a vibrant and engaging foreign language experience for all pupils which fosters a love of language learning and to develop pupils into accomplished, independent, and passionate linguists through exposure to a range of rich and relevant songs, rhymes, games, spoken conversation and written experiences.
Key aspects of the MFL curriculum intent include:
1. Communication Skills: Emphasizing the importance of effective communication, the curriculum aims to equip pupils with the ability to express their ideas and opinions, seek information, and respond to speakers of the language across the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing
2. Cultural Awareness: The curriculum promotes curiosity and empathy towards different cultures especially those represented in the Luton community, encouraging pupils to appreciate, tolerate, respect and be empathetic towards diverse perspectives. This cultural understanding is seen as essential for pupils to consider their own identity and place in both the Luton school community and wider world
3. Educational and Cultural Capital: Ensuring that all pupils acquire the educational and cultural capital to which they are entitled, the curriculum aims to provide maximum opportunities for language learning through lessons, trips, and extra-curricular activities
4. Progressive Learning: The curriculum is aspirational and structured to provide a coherent and progressive framework, allowing pupils to explore the breadth and depth of the national curriculum in languages. This includes developing critical thinking skills and committing learning to long-term memory
5. Inclusivity and Equity: Recognizing that learning is a journey with different starting points and ways of learning, the curriculum is designed to be inclusive and equitable for all. It aims to provide additional or different opportunities to ensure all pupils can succeed
6. Enjoyment and Independence: Fostering enjoyment and independence through the teaching of new skills across a wide range of contexts, the curriculum encourages pupils to develop courage, resilience, and self-confidence
By integrating these elements, the MFL curriculum seeks to create well-rounded individuals who are ready to engage with the global community and succeed in the multi cultural world in which they find themselves.
