PSHE

Intent
As part of a broad and balanced curriculum offer at Luton Primary, we place personal, social, health and economic development at the heart of all we do through our values driven curriculum. The intent of the Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education curriculum is to equip pupils with the knowledge, compassion, confidence, skills, and respect they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. The curriculum is designed to help pupils stay healthy, safe, and prepared for life and work in modern Britain and the wider World. We do this through our school values Dignity, Aspiration, Respect and Equity (DARE).
Key aspects of the PSHE curriculum intent include:
1. Health and Wellbeing: The curriculum aims to promote physical and mental health, encouraging pupils to adopt healthy lifestyles and understand the importance of mental wellbeing. This includes education on nutrition, exercise, mental health awareness, and strategies for managing stress and emotions.
2. Relationships: The curriculum focuses on developing pupils' understanding of positive relationships, including friendships, family relationships, and relationships with peers and adults. It covers topics such as respect, empathy, consent, and managing conflict. Healthy and respectful relationships are embedded throughout our Luton way embracing our multi-diverse community through sharing our different cultures, languages and experiences.
3. Living in the Wider World: The curriculum prepares pupils for life beyond school by teaching them about economic wellbeing, careers, and the world of work. This includes financial education, understanding the economy, and developing skills for future employment.
4. Inclusivity and Respect: The curriculum promotes inclusivity and respect for diversity, encouraging pupils to appreciate and respect different cultures, beliefs, and lifestyles. It aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment where all pupils feel valued and respected enabling them to make progress at their own developmental stage.
5. Critical Thinking and Decision Making: The curriculum encourages pupils to develop critical thinking skills and make informed decisions. This includes understanding the consequences of their actions, assessing risks, and making choices that promote their wellbeing and the wellbeing of others.
6. Personal Development: The curriculum supports pupils' personal development by helping them to build self-confidence, resilience, tolerance, and independence. It encourages pupils to set personal goals, reflect on their achievements, and develop a growth mindset.
7. Community Engagement: The curriculum fosters a sense of community by encouraging pupils to engage with, share experiences and contribute to their local Luton community and global communities. This includes understanding their rights and responsibilities as citizens giving them confidence to participate in community projects and initiatives.
By integrating these elements, the PSHE curriculum aims to create well-rounded individuals who are ready to navigate the complexities of modern life and contribute positively to society.
