What does learning look like in EYFS
Our EYFS curriculum is delivered through high-quality teaching, purposeful play and rich learning experiences tailored to children’s needs. Practitioners draw on strong knowledge of child development and ongoing assessment to ensure learning is progressive and inclusive.
A balance of adult-led and child-initiated learning ensures children can explore, apply and deepen their understanding. Continuous provision is carefully designed and enhanced to promote independence, curiosity and the Characteristics of Effective Learning. Adults engage purposefully with children to model language, extend thinking and move learning forward.
Communication, Language and Literacy
Communication and Language underpin all learning. Talk for Reading and Talk for Writing approaches develop vocabulary, oral language and comprehension, enabling children to articulate ideas confidently and form secure early writing skills. Phonics teaching through Sounds Write ensures systematic development of decoding, blending and transcription. Rich reading experiences—daily storytelling, shared reading, rhymes and songs—build a love for reading.
Mathematics
Using a Maths Mastery approach, mathematical learning is carefully sequenced to develop secure understanding of number, pattern, shape and measure. Children explore concepts through direct teaching, structured activities and meaningful play, with a strong focus on mathematical language, reasoning and representation.
Personal Development and Wellbeing
Personal, Social and Emotional Development is central. Through routines, interactions, PSHE and the Zones of Regulation, children learn to build relationships, manage emotions and develop self-regulation. Our school rules and core values are modelled and embedded daily, alongside explicit Rights Respecting practice to support children’s understanding of safety, fairness and responsibility.
Enrichment and the Wider Curriculum
We broaden children’s experiences through a rich curriculum including Forest School, creative arts and meaningful opportunities within Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. This supports physical development, creativity, cultural awareness and confidence.
Inclusion and Partnerships
Provision is adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including children with SEND and EAL. Early identification and timely intervention are supported through collaboration with families and external professionals, including Trust therapists. Strong home-school partnerships ensure parents are engaged as co-educators through communication, workshops and shared learning.
Planning and Assessment
Planning is collaborative, responsive and informed by ongoing assessment. The team continually reflects on provision, identifies next steps and adjusts teaching to ensure progression and high expectations for every child. Assessment is used to identify gaps, guide intervention and ensure learning builds cumulatively over time.
