Design and Technology

Intent
“Design is thinking made visual” – Saul Bass
The intent of the Design and Technology (DT) curriculum is to provide pupils with the skills, knowledge, and creativity to engage with the designed and made world. The curriculum aims to inspire pupils to become innovative thinkers and creative problem solvers as individuals and as part of a team. Design and Technology at Luton Primary will ensure that all pupils will become informed consumers and potential innovators. Every pupil will understand there is no limit to what they can achieve and high aspirations.
Key aspects of the DT curriculum intent include:
1. Creativity and Innovation: The curriculum encourages pupils to use creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems. This involves considering their own and others' needs, wants, and values. Pupils will use their knowledge from other areas of the curriculum such as science, maths, computing and art to support careful planning and creation of their designs.
2. Practical Skills and Techniques: Pupils are provided with opportunities to develop practical skills and techniques in exploring, designing, making, and evaluating products. This includes working with a variety of materials and tools, understanding the properties and uses of different materials, and learning about construction, mechanisms, and electrical systems, as well as the aesthetic and functionality of their end product.
3. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: The curriculum promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Pupils are encouraged to research and design, think critically, question, give opinions, evaluate and reflect on their own and others’ work. As their confidence and experience grows pupils will become more resilient which will support them to overcome challenges as well as become critical thinkers.
4. Inclusivity and Accessibility: Recognizing that learning is a journey with different starting points and ways of learning. The curriculum is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all pupils through strategies which staff use effectively.
5. Engagement and Enjoyment: The curriculum seeks to foster a passion for design and technology and pride in both their own work and that of their peers by creating engaging and enriching learning experiences. This includes hands-on projects, real-world problem-solving, and opportunities to explore and experiment with new ideas
