Intent
At Luton Primary, the geography curriculum is designed to stimulate and inspire a lifelong curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Our intent is to equip our pupils with a deep understanding of the physical and human processes that shape our planet, fostering a sense of responsibility and ownership for the protection of our environment. Our curriculum is designed to allow progression of pupil’s substantive and disciplinary knowledge. We aim to achieve this through memorable experiences and learning activities.
Aims and Objectives:
1. Knowledge and Understanding: We aim to provide pupils with a curiosity to develop a comprehensive understanding of key geographical concepts, including physical geography (such as climate, landscapes, and ecosystems) and human geography (such as urbanization, globalization, and cultural diversity). Students will explore the interconnections between these concepts and their impact on the world.
2. Skills Development: Our curriculum emphasizes the development of critical geographical skills, including map reading, data analysis, fieldwork techniques, and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). These skills are essential for pupils to investigate and interpret geographical phenomena effectively. We aim to support pupils to understand how different views, values and perspectives influence and affect places and environments at different scales.
3. Global Awareness: We strive to cultivate a global perspective in our pupils, encouraging them to appreciate the diversity of cultures, economies, and environments around the world. Through case studies and real-world examples, pupils will gain insights into global challenges such as climate change, migration, and sustainable development.
4. Environmental Stewardship: A key objective of our geography curriculum is to instil a sense of environmental responsibility in our students. We aim to raise awareness of environmental issues and promote sustainable practices, empowering students to make informed decisions that contribute to the well-being of our planet.
5. Critical Thinking and Inquiry: Our pupils are encouraged to develop the ability to reach clear conclusions, develop a reasoned argument to explain findings and express well-balanced opinions rooted in very good knowledge and understanding about current and contemporary issues in society and the environment. We encourage pupils to think critically, be inquisitive and engage in geographical inquiry. By posing questions, conducting investigations, and evaluating evidence, pupils will develop the ability to form reasoned conclusions and communicate their findings effectively.
